Attended ELTHAM 2001 - 2006
James paints portraits of people. He does so to signify and articulate his relationships with those closest to him; including himself. Drawing from prominently black and white photographs, life and a main influence of Lucian Freud's body of work, the initial purpose stems from little more than a fascinating pose or a simple exercise in expression and figure, ultimately ending in an intimate and somewhat abstract representation of the subject; a frustrating practice bookended by an odd sense of achievement and relief. Masterworks marks the second occasion his work has been displayed in public.
