Attended ELTHAM 1980 - 1985
Penelope makes paintings and installations about the cultural, psychological and aesthetic intentions behind belonging and displacement.
Holding regular solo exhibitions since 1995 and group exhibitions since 1989, Penelope has shown in public and commercial galleries, artist run spaces and festivals in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Bundaberg, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Tokyo and Famagusta, Northern Cyprus. She completed a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education both from The University of Melbourne and a Masters of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2004.
In 2007 she spent two months at the Nillumbik Laughing Waters Residency at Birrarung in Eltham, precipitating a move back to this area and beginning an extensive focus on local landscapes and the ways in which these accommodate cultural revision.
The paintings shown here are her imaginary field notes about transplanted life: where nature meets culture and where a particular detail stands out from an infinite whole.
